At press time the Justice Department had made a tentative proposal to be submitted to a federal judge that would force the Microsoft Corporation to be broken up into two companies--one for its operating system and the other to house its Office applications software business and most other operations. In the long running case, Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson found that Microsoft had a monopoly as its Windows product has close to 85% of the market for personal computer operating systems.
