Julio Gomez has joined the independent research and advisory firm Financial Insights as VP of Capital Markets, Risk Management and Financial Markets Investor Research, according to today's announcement. Gomez will takeover the role of global head of capital markets and risk management research with responsibility for Europe and Asia Pacific as well as North America."It's a fairly new position," says Gomez reached in his Framingham, Mass. office today. "Basically, I'm covering hot button issues in capital markets both in terms of important technology trends that are affecting business performance and business strategy at financial institutions." He will also cover how financial institutions are marketing their services to the buy side and also best practices in the deployment of strategic technology.

"We'll track the industry trends but we're going to be obsessing over how companies are deploying strategies and systems to either minimize the negative effect or exploit the opportunities presented to them," says Gomez.

Gomez is widely known in the financial services industry as the founder and CEO of Gomez, Inc., which he grew into a leading Internet quality measurement service by monitoring the performance of online banking and online brokerage.

Before founding Gomez in the 1990s, Gomez was a capital markets executive for 11 years, according to the release. He held trading, sales and corporate finance positions at HSBC, Security Pacific and Bank of Boston. He also started his own brokerage firm specializing in state and local bond issues.

Most recently, Gomez spent the past two years doing global studies with Harvard Business School professors on the impact of IT on business performance. Now that he's back in the financial services industry, Gomez says, " I think capital markets and risk management research is an area where there is a lot of work to be done. My goal is to be the preeminent resource for in-depth research with a focus on the issues that matter most," he says.

Gomez says he took on this role at Financial Insights because there is a tremendous amount of resources to leverage here, pointing to the 900 analysts at IDC focusing on deep technology issues.

In part, Gomez replaces Deborah Williams, a founder of Meridian Research, which became the foundation for starting Financial Insights, now an IDC company. Williams, who specialized in risk management technology, left Financial Insights to take a position as SVP of risk at Ivy is Editor-at-Large for Advanced Trading and Wall Street & Technology. Ivy is responsible for writing in-depth feature articles, daily blogs and news articles with a focus on automated trading in the capital markets.
