Markit Unveils Patent Data for Traders, Portfolio Managers

The firm says its patent analysis platform will help traders and portfolio managers uncover new trading opportunities.

Markit, a global financial information services company, announced the launch of a new factor model that will enable users to evaluate the quality of patent portfolios held by publically-traded companies.

The firm said the platform - dubbed the Markit Intellectual Property (IP) Model - is designed to help traders, analysts and portfolio managers compare the quality of patent portfolios being held by more than 1,200 public companies. Markit said the service analyzes more than 4.5 million U.S. patents.

"IP has a low correlation to more traditional financial indicators, and our ability to score patent portfolios presents a new range of exciting analytic and trading opportunities," Markit managing director Tim Sargent said in a statement.
