Survey: How Should We Educate the Next Generation Buy Side Trader?

With the faster and more complex electronic markets, what is the future skill set needed for the buy side trader?

Today, buy side traders are executing orders with algorithms, relying on smart order routers to piece together fragmented liquidity across dark pools and exchanges. Everyone says the business is more quantitative. Yet the business is changing every day with new regulations, technical glitches, collateral requirements, and social media feeds to parse to find an edge. Where are things headed?

Advanced Trading is working on a story about the education of the buy side trader. As the investment management firms and hedge funds look to bring in a new generation of traders, what subjects should they study to prepare them? Should they major in mathematics? Do they need to program their own algorithms? Are colleges preparing them for the rigors of the trading desk? Are buy-side firms still offering training programs? Our story will research these questions. To help us get started, we are asking our readers to take this brief survey.
