IN BRIEF

Fimat, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, E*Trade and Wit SoundView.

Fimat, a global brokerage and part of the Societe Generale Group, has signed a letter of intent to invest and participate in Latin America's first B2B commodity marketplace. The Internet-based electronic marketplace, BOLSA1 will be based in Brazil, with trading initially in sugar and alcohol to be added in a few weeks. Other commodities markets, such as cotton, corn, wheat and soybeans, are expected to trade on BOLSA1 later this year.

The Chicago Mercantile Exchange's (CME) E-mini S&P 500 stock price index reached record levels on May 15, with open interest reaching 40,964. Open interest on the E-mini Nasdaq 100 also hit a record at 23,914. Both contracts are traded electronically on the CME's Globex2 system and are smaller-sized versions of contracts traded actively via open outcry on the exchange's floor.

Trading in all shares listed on French markets- the Premier Marche, Second Marche, Nouveau Marche and Marche Libre- will shift to a cash-settlement basis beginning September 22. France will move away from its monthly settlement procedure with the last monthly account closing on September 22nd, with settlement on the 29th. The ParisBourse has created a deferred settlement service to allow shareholders to benefit from leverage and other monthly settlement features. In addition, the ParisBourse is opening a centralized securities borrowing and lending market to provide financial intermediaries with securities to meet investor demand at all times. It will be open to market members and feature a morning call auction.

E*Trade and Wit SoundView have formed an alliance to create a next generation investment banking firm. Under the arrangement, Wit SoundView will become the exclusive source of IPOs, follow-on offering and other investment banking products to E*Trade customers. E*Trade customers will gain access to expanded investment products, such as Wit SoundView's proprietary research. General Atlantic and E*Trade will purchase 2 million additional shares of Wit Capital Group common stock, and E*Trade will acquire all of Wit SoundView's brokerage accounts.

Zahr Securities has licensed Watcher Technologies' WatcherPlus direct access trading system to help its commodities traders transition into equities trading.
