AG Barrington, a financial technology recruitment and research firm released findings of its first-ever Salary Survey at the SIA Technology and Management show. AG Barrington surveyed 200 mid- to senior-level employees and focused on the compensation packages of the technology professionals during the 1999 year in positions ranging from portfolio management and accounting, front-office trading, risk management and data warehousing technology.

In terms of specific dollar amounts paid to technology professionals, the highest salary totaled $1.5 million in the position of chief technology officer at a major Wall Street bank and brokerage. The lowest compensation package was $48,000 for a quality assurance tester at a trading systems vendor in New York. In between those extremes, Alan Geller, managing director, says the median total package was $140,000, with $112,000 as the base salary median and $28,000 the bonus median.

"The reason for this survey is mainly because these technology professionals we meet with don't have a clue where they stand in the marketplace as it relates to compensation," says Alan Geller. "They have a kind of blended expertise, with the business knowledge and some kind of technology knowledge so they're not being looked at as a pure IT person and they're not being looked at as, say, a trader." It's this type of technology professional that AG Barrington was looking to categorize and get a broader picture of the salaries appropriate for the various positions.
