Information Visualization Technology: Conceptual White Paper

Date: August 2007
Type: White Paper
Rating: (0)

Overview: Visualization in general and treemaps/heatmaps in particular is a fast growing industry, as data becomes more complex and the need to simply analyze and grasp large amounts of information becomes more important. A significant competitive advantage can be created by reducing costs and speeding up the decision making processes as well as ensuring that the decisions that are made are of better quality. The ability to both analyze large amounts of complex data and manage real-time information feeds is fast becoming a must have for companies in the finance industry and elsewhere. The human eye and mind are good at taking in information such as visual patterns, size and color variation. Treemaps appeal more to human perception than do traditional alphanumerical lists, tables or diagrams. With a treemap, you can make sense out of large, arbitrary data sets by using color, size and grouping. The treemap is not a static picture and since it is interactive it is also a powerful navigation and analytics tool. Interactivity allows the user to choose which dimension in the dataset to use for color, size or grouping, but also to zoom, filter and view details on demand. It is possible to link and highlight other sources of information. You can link to for instance a trading system directly from within the treemap. Panopticon’s products thus enable users to visualize and act upon critical patterns in live business information. Users will be able to quickly uncover dependencies and opportunities hidden to others.
