Firms Resist Outsourcing Content Security

New AIIM survey shows that firms are reluctant to adopt an out-of-house model for content security.

Content security is an extraordinarily important but complex and multilayered issue with which firms of all sizes and in all sectors of the financial industry are perpetually challenged. One strategy for relieving IT of the burden of content security is to outsource the task or utilize a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model. Research from enterprise content management association AIIM (Silver Spring, Md.), however, indicates a strong reluctance among companies to adopt an out-of-house model for content security.

In a survey of 600 end users across all industries (5 percent from the financial industry), AIIM found that 78 percent of respondents would not be likely to outsource content security or utilize a SaaS model. While no single response dominated survey participants' reasoning for keeping content security in-house, the most popular driver cited for not outsourcing content security was a lack of control (39 percent) with outsourced solutions. The No. 2 response (24 percent) was that the solution was too complex for an outsourced or SaaS approach.

While AIIM agrees that the solution to content security challenges may be too complex for an entirely outsourced approach, the association believes that careful strategizing and implementation of a combination of outsourced and in-house solutions eventually will be adopted as the most effective strategy.
