That's exactly what high frequency algorithmic trading does. Mr Waelbroeck's article is basically outlining a new algorithmic trading method with a new optimization objective and new data sets.

It sounds like buy-side traders can get an edge over high frequency traders if they can analyze real time results of their algorithmic executions to gauge supply and demand imbalances and predict trade urgency and best strategy. What about HFT's use of different order types? Does this matter?
