Independent broker-dealer Wedbush Securities announced the hiring of Ian Winer as director of its equity trading segment, where he'll be tasked with supervising the firm's sales and position traders.

Winer was previously a managing director at Nomura Securities International, a firm that's recently endured rounds of layoffs amid a severe global slowdown in equities trading. Wedbush said that in addition to managing all aspects of its equities division, Winer is also charged with increasing the firm's interactions with equity clients.

The company added that Winer has more than 16 years of experience working on both the buy- and sell-sides.

"His proven track record of building a succesful cash trading business, coupled with his equity trading expertise in technology, media and telecommunications made him the ideal candidate to lead our trading effort," said Sheri Kaiserman, Wedbush's head of equities.
