To help companies deal with the challenge of virtual server sprawl, IBM has rolled out a product called VMControl.

IBM says VMControl allows combinations of physical and virtual IBM servers to be managed as a single entity.

Many other vendors are working to address the problems of managing virtual machines across a large organization. Credit Suisse spinoff DynamicOps offers software to manage virtual desktops as well as servers. Bluestripe offers application management across virtual servers.

IBM also announced a new version of Tivoli Provisioning Manager today that the company says automates the manual tasks of provisioning and configuring servers, operating systems, middleware, software applications, storage and network devices.
