Real-Time Risk Reduction Needed in a Fast-Moving Trading World

GAIN Capital adopts real-time analytics to evaluate its liquidity partners and manage under-performers on the fly.

Beyond Liquidity

According to Perez, GAIN plans to continue applying LiveView to other business functions. "Anything that needs a real-time look is a potential candidate," he affirms. "We've already discussed network monitoring, web analytics and fraud surveillance. We'll be sitting down with our business users and determining which initiative makes the most sense."

Indeed, LiveView's versatility is among its key attributes, says StreamBase CTO and cofounder Richard Tibbetts. "It's potentially bigger than the capital markets, but that's where we're focused at the moment," he says.

Yet Aite's Paz suggests one possible downside to such new technology is the lack of common protocols for accessing datasets that are currently outside the StreamBase offerings. While validating Paz's point, Tibbetts counters that LiveView already offers "125 connectivity options, which we're only going to increase." Supported protocols run the gamut from brand-name databases and market domain-specific sources to popular analytics, messaging and social media protocols, Tibbetts adds. "And we're always thinking about how to bring people together to build additional common protocols," he says.

Regardless, both Paz and Honore emphasize the significance of LiveView and GAIN's adoption of the solution. "What GAIN is doing isn't commonplace," insists Paz. "There are other solutions that feed data through an analytics platform designed for business users, but most are homegrown."

The market has yet to catch up with the new demands, adds Honore. "I've spoken with a number of traditional BI providers," he says. "I don't think they yet understand what end users want."

According to GAIN's Perez, being on the leading edge suits GAIN just fine. "We haven't seen anything else on the market that provides real-time intelligence like LiveView," he asserts. "We're really psyched about all the possibilities."
