Guidance Software Unveils Data Mapping Service

The new service aims to help firms locate data and assess risks from lost data.

Guidance Software unveiled its new data mapping service for companies looking to locate data, assess their risks from misplaced data and remediate any problems.

"The data map is an integral part of any litigation-readiness plan," said Katey Wood, analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. "A thorough knowledge of corporate IT infrastructure is key to a repeatable and defensible e-discovery process. By knowing what storage devices exist and what type of information is stored where, businesses can increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the e-discovery process."

Gartner estimates that data will grow 800 percent over the next five years, and 80 percent of that data will be unstructured. Unstructured data is information that doesn't reside in a database. Unstructured and unmanaged business data--and the lack of visibility into the data--cause business problems before and during litigation, Guidance Software pointed out.

"Being prepared for possible litigation is important to reduce costs and ensure compliance with regulations," said Amanda Berger, VP of professional services, Guidance Software. "Our new Data Mapping Service not only provides insight and awareness into what types of business data exists but also helps reduce risk and litigation costs."

"We first interview key stakeholders and business-line owners," added Berger. "We then use EnCase eDiscovery software to scan target endpoints for ESI. Only Guidance Software is able to provide this level of visibility into endpoints and across the business with EnCase. We compile the results, develop summary findings, assess risk and present an action plan."
