This Teen Actress Beat Your Broker

Will your next fund manager be a teenage starlet? Sure, why not?

Meet Rachel Fox. The 16 year-old actress has shared the big screen with Daniel Craig in Dream House and Eva Langoria on TV's Desperate Housewives and she's a very active trader. In her charming interview on CNBC last week, we learn that the young actress made 328 trades in 2012 with a 34 percent return on the year. Not too shabby, when you consider the terrible time most hedge funds had last year.

New York Magazine caught up with the thespian/trader and found her ambitious and disciplined. She doesn't have a Bloomberg terminal but uses Scottrade as her platform. "Well, I don't like trading stocks that are very news-dependent. I trade on the technical analysis of stocks," she says.

This isn't the first time celebrities have dipped a toe in the markets -- often with varying results. MASH's original Trapper John (the TV show, that is) Wayne Rogers has made a killing on real estate ventures and often appeared on Fox Business News. Hip-hop great 50 Cent came very close to gaming charges when he promoted some penny stocks he owned on Twitter in 2010. (As the saying goes, "Don't hate the playa, hate the gaming.")

When asked if she'd start a hedge fund, Fox sounds rather level-headed despite her youth. "Maybe I'll start a hedge fund," she tells New York Magazine. "I'd have to let people know the extreme risk they’d be taking, though."

At any rate it's fairly impressive for a 16-year-old. Perhaps one day we'll see some more educational finance programs in high schools.

Oh yes. There are many 'celebrity' funds that went south. HRJ was a big one, founded by ex-NFL stars Ronnie Lott and Harris Barton.

Let's not forget Lenny Dykstra and his notorious trading/investment prowess (not).
