SEC Imposter Alert

Not only do companies have to worry about stolen laptops, rogue employees and hackers -- now they also have to worry about fake SEC examiners.

Today the Securities and Exchange Commission warned the securities industry about a new scam, which sees imposters passing themselves off as SEC staff and demanding immediate access to confidential records.

The SEC writes on its Web site that incidents have been reported “on more than one occasion.” In some cases, imposters claimed to be conducting an “emergency” examination. In others they pretended to be gathering information for a well-known SEC official.

Would-be victims are urged to ask for the suspicious caller’s name, office and phone number and to tell them they will be called back. The SEC advises companies to then double-check phone numbers on its own Web site before sharing any confidential information.
